How to Collect Your Clara Spot Sample: A Step-by-Step Guide

A few drops, one envelope, results in days. This guide walks you through every step of collecting your Clara Spot™ blood spot sample at home. Read all six steps before you start, and keep the printed instructions from your kit handy.

Before you collect: register your card

Required: register every Sample Card at claraspot.com before you collect. You need the Sample ID printed on your card and your provider's ID (no provider ID? Ask your provider). If you skip this step, the lab cannot process your sample.

Storage: keep Sample Cards cool and dry, between 59 and 77°F (15 to 25°C), away from sunlight and moisture.

What's in your kit

• 1 Sample Card per sample

• 2 Alcohol Wipes per sample

• 2 Lancets per sample

• 2 Bandages per sample

• 1 Sample Bag per sample

• 1 Return Envelope

Use only these components. If anything is missing, damaged or expired (check the date on the kit package), don't use it. Get help at claraspot.com/support.

Step 1: Register your card

1.  Print your name, date of birth and collection date on the Sample Card. They must match your account. Unlabeled cards may be rejected or delayed.

2.  Scan the QR code on your kit or visit claraspot.com. Log in, or tap "Create Account."

3.  Go to "Register your Kit" (or "Register a Kit") and enter the number on your Sample Card.

Step 2: Prepare

1.  Lay out an alcohol wipe, lancet, Sample Card and bandage. Open the card on a flat surface.

2.  Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 1 minute. Dry completely.

3.  Clean your ring finger with the alcohol wipe. Let it air-dry. Do not blow on it.

4.  Shake your hand vigorously for 30 seconds to boost blood flow.

Step 3: Collect your sample

1.  Twist off the lancet top. Press the white tip firmly against the side of your clean fingertip.

2.  Gently press from below the puncture until a large drop forms. Hold your finger down over the first circle.

3.  Let the drop fall onto the center of the circle and spread to the dotted line. Never press, rub or smear your finger on the card.

4.  Fill at least 4 circles, soaked through. Can't fill them with one finger? Use the second lancet on a freshly cleaned finger.

5.  Bandage your finger if needed.

Step 4: Dry your card

1.  Leave the card open for at least 20 minutes in a cool, dry place out of sunlight. Do not close it until it is fully dry.

2.  Tuck the cover into the flap, slide the card into its own Sample Bag and seal it tightly.

3.  Second sample requested? Keep the first bagged card cool and dry, then ship both together. Do not freeze.

Step 5: Ship your kit

1.  Place each sealed Sample Bag in the Return Envelope and seal it.

2.  Drop it at a FedEx® drop box or shipping center as soon as possible. Find one at local.fedex.com.

3.  Under 35°F (2°C) or over 90°F (32°C) outside? Drop it inside a FedEx location or keep it indoors.

4.  Free pickup is available Monday to Friday at most locations. Call FedEx at 1 (800) 463-3339 at least one day ahead. Keep your tracking number.

Step 6: Get your results

1.  You'll get an email or text when results are ready, typically 2 to 4 days after the lab receives your samples. Log in to your account for updates.

2.  Your health care provider will help you interpret your results.

Safety and limitations

• Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder or take medications that increase the risk of bleeding.

• Do not use if you are at risk of fainting when giving blood samples.

• Never use the lancets on broken, damaged, ulcerated, scarred or infected skin.

• Lancets may cause bruising, tenderness, soreness, pain, nerve damage, skin scarring, bone damage or infection. Seek medical attention if you have concerns.

• Available with your health care provider's approval. Validated for ages 18 and older.

• Keep out of reach of children. Small parts may pose a choking hazard.
