Candesartan (Atacand) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that blocks the binding of angiotensin II, relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. It is used to treat hypertension and, in some patients, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Typical hypertension dosing starts at 16 mg once daily, with a usual range of 8-32 mg per day, given once or divided twice daily; heart failure dosing typically starts at 4 mg once daily and is titrated upward as tolerated. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, and upper respiratory symptoms. Candesartan can cause elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia) and should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics or supplements. It may cause low blood pressure in patients who are volume- or salt-depleted. Candesartan can cause fetal harm and should be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is detected.

Important: Candesartan can raise potassium levels (hyperkalemia), so use caution with kidney impairment or potassium-sparing diuretics/supplements. It may cause low blood pressure in patients who are dehydrated or on other blood pressure medications.
