Fluvoxamine (Luvox) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin availability in the brain by blocking its reuptake. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults and children, and is also used off-label for depression, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. Dosing typically starts low and is titrated gradually to minimize gastrointestinal side effects and improve tolerability. As with other SSRIs, fluvoxamine carries a boxed warning regarding increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults, and abrupt discontinuation should be avoided due to the risk of discontinuation symptoms.
