Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate (vitamin B9), an essential nutrient required for DNA synthesis, cell division, and red blood cell formation. It is used to treat and prevent folate-deficiency anemia and is widely recommended for women of childbearing age to reduce the risk of neural tube defects during pregnancy. Folic acid is also used adjunctively in patients taking methotrexate to reduce certain side effects. It is generally well tolerated with a wide margin of safety, though high doses can mask the hematologic signs of underlying vitamin B12 deficiency.
