Galantamine (Razadyne) works by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, increasing levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain to help improve cognitive function. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's-type dementia. Dosing is titrated slowly to reduce gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and vomiting, and the medication should be taken with food. Galantamine should be used cautiously in patients with cardiac conduction abnormalities or a history of ulcer disease due to its cholinergic effects.
