Haloperidol (Haldol) is a typical antipsychotic that works primarily by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the brain. It is FDA-approved for the management of schizophrenia, acute psychotic states, and the control of tics and vocal utterances in Tourette's syndrome, and is also used for severe behavioral problems. As a first-generation agent, it carries a notable risk of extrapyramidal symptoms (dystonia, akathisia, tardive dyskinesia) and, like other antipsychotics, carries a boxed warning for increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Regular monitoring for movement disorders and QT prolongation is recommended during treatment.
