Labetalol

Labetalol (Trandate) blocks both alpha-1 and beta-adrenergic receptors, lowering blood pressure through a combination of reduced peripheral vascular resistance and decreased heart rate/cardiac output. It is FDA-approved for the management of hypertension and is frequently used in pregnancy-related hypertension due to its favorable safety profile. Labetalol should not be discontinued abruptly, as this can precipitate rebound hypertension or angina; doses should be tapered gradually under medical supervision. Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, and orthostatic hypotension.
