Lurasidone (Latuda) is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic that works by modulating dopamine and serotonin receptor activity in the brain. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents, and for depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression), either alone or with lithium or valproate. Lurasidone must be taken with food to ensure adequate absorption. Like other atypical antipsychotics, it carries a boxed warning for increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis and can cause metabolic side effects such as weight gain and changes in blood sugar or lipids.
