Metolazone (Zaroxolyn) is a thiazide-like diuretic that increases sodium and water excretion by the kidneys, used for the management of hypertension and edema associated with heart failure, kidney disease, or corticosteroid/estrogen therapy. It is frequently used in combination with loop diuretics (such as furosemide) in patients with diuretic-resistant edema, producing a synergistic diuretic effect. Because of this synergy, electrolyte levels (particularly potassium and sodium) and kidney function should be monitored closely to avoid dehydration or significant electrolyte imbalance.
