Potassium Chloride

Potassium chloride (K-Dur, Klor-Con) replenishes potassium, an essential electrolyte for normal nerve and muscle function (including the heart), in patients who are deficient or at risk of deficiency, such as those taking potassium-wasting diuretics. Extended-release formulations are designed to release potassium gradually to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. Potassium supplements should be taken with food and adequate fluids, and patients should avoid potassium-sparing diuretics or other sources of significant potassium intake without medical guidance, since excessive potassium (hyperkalemia) can cause dangerous cardiac arrhythmias.
