Prasugrel

Prasugrel (Effient) is a P2Y12 platelet receptor inhibitor that prevents platelets from clumping together, reducing the risk of blood clots. It is FDA-approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (such as stent thrombosis, heart attack, or stroke) in patients with acute coronary syndrome who are managed with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), usually given alongside aspirin. Prasugrel carries a boxed warning for significant, sometimes fatal, bleeding risk, and is contraindicated in patients with a history of stroke or TIA; it should generally be discontinued at least 7 days before elective surgery.
