Raloxifene (Evista) is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that mimics estrogen's beneficial effects on bone density while blocking estrogen's effects on breast and uterine tissue. It is FDA-approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and also for reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women at high risk. Raloxifene carries a boxed warning for increased risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clots) and should be discontinued before prolonged immobilization, such as long-haul travel or surgery.
