Sucralfate (Carafate) forms a protective, adhesive barrier over ulcerated gastrointestinal tissue, shielding it from stomach acid, pepsin, and bile salts to promote healing. It is FDA-approved for the short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers and for maintenance therapy to prevent ulcer recurrence. Because sucralfate requires an acidic environment and local contact with the GI mucosa to work, it should be taken on an empty stomach, separated from other medications (especially antacids) by at least 2 hours, since it can bind to and reduce the absorption of many other drugs.
