Tazarotene (Tazorac) is a topical retinoid available as a cream or gel in 0.05% and 0.1% strengths. It is applied in a thin layer once daily in the evening to affected areas of skin, after the skin has been washed and dried. It is FDA approved for plaque psoriasis (both strengths) and acne vulgaris (0.1% strength). Because tazarotene can cause birth defects, females of childbearing age should use effective contraception and confirm a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment. Patients should avoid excess sun exposure and use daily sunscreen, since skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight during treatment. Common side effects include redness, burning, itching, and peeling at the application site.
