Tranexamic acid (Lysteda) works by inhibiting the breakdown of blood clots (antifibrinolytic activity), helping to reduce excessive bleeding. The oral tablet form is FDA-approved for the treatment of cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding, taken only during the days of heaviest flow. Tranexamic acid is also used in other settings (such as trauma and surgery) in different formulations. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism) or those taking combined hormonal contraceptives, as these may further increase clotting risk.
