Tretinoin (Retin-A, Retin-A Micro) is a topical retinoid available in cream (0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%) and gel (0.01%, 0.025%) forms, indicated for acne vulgaris. Apply a pea-sized amount once daily at bedtime to clean, completely dry skin, waiting 20 to 30 minutes after washing before application. Avoid the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Skin may become more sensitive to sunlight and wind, so patients should minimize sun exposure and use sunscreen. Common effects include redness, peeling, dryness, and stinging at the application site, which typically improve as the skin adjusts. These effects are reversible upon stopping treatment. Gel formulations are flammable and should be stored away from heat.
