Ziprasidone (Geodon) is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic that modulates dopamine and serotonin receptor activity in the brain. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and for acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder. Ziprasidone must be taken with food (at least 500 calories) to ensure adequate absorption, and it carries a notable risk of QT interval prolongation, so it should be used cautiously with other QT-prolonging medications or in patients with cardiac risk factors; like other antipsychotics, it carries a boxed warning for increased mortality in elderly dementia patients.
