Zolmitriptan (Zomig) is a serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptor agonist that constricts dilated cranial blood vessels and reduces the release of inflammatory neuropeptides implicated in migraine pain. It is FDA-approved for the acute treatment of migraine headaches in adults, and is available as a standard tablet or orally disintegrating tablet for convenient dosing without water. Zolmitriptan is intended for the treatment of an acute migraine attack, not for migraine prevention, and should not be used in patients with certain cardiovascular conditions due to its vasoconstrictive effects.
