Halobetasol propionate (Ultravate) is a super-high-potency topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and redness by suppressing local immune activity in the skin. It is commonly used for short-term treatment of moderate to severe corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, including plaque psoriasis. Due to its potency, treatment is generally limited to two consecutive weeks and should not exceed 50 grams per week to reduce the risk of skin atrophy, striae, and systemic absorption (which can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis). It should not be used on the face, groin, or underarms unless directed by a physician.
