Levocetirizine (Xyzal) is the active enantiomer of cetirizine and works by blocking histamine H1 receptors to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and hives. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children. Compared to first-generation antihistamines, levocetirizine causes significantly less sedation, though some patients may still experience drowsiness, particularly at higher doses or with alcohol use. Dose adjustment is required in patients with reduced kidney function.
