Olopatadine hydrochloride nasal spray (Patanase) is a prescription antihistamine used to relieve sneezing, itching, and runny nose caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking histamine, a chemical released during allergic reactions that causes nasal itching, congestion, and drainage. The usual dose is 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily for adults and children 12 and older, or 1 spray in each nostril twice daily for children 6 to 11 years old; it is not approved for children under 6. The most common side effects are a bitter taste in the mouth, headache, nosebleed (epistaxis), throat irritation, and post-nasal drip. Olopatadine nasal spray can cause drowsiness, so patients should use caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how it affects them, and should avoid alcohol or other sedating medications while using it. It is intended for regular, scheduled use to control allergy symptoms rather than for as-needed relief of a single episode.

Because olopatadine can cause drowsiness, avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol or other sedating medications. This medication works best when used regularly as directed and is not intended for immediate, as-needed relief.
